Friday Afternoon
Friday Afternoon - The last ski.
After lunch, we made the final walk to meet our instructors at the chair lift. All three groups went up the mountain together and then went their separate ways. We have probably, between us, covered every inch of snow in the whole of Serre Chevalier. The slope were still reasonable and most groups opted for fun and a visit to the Ski Park. Mrs Major’s group have now progressed so far that they can ski confidently across a variety of blue and green runs. Isabella, Rosie and Amelia have grown in confidence and are skiing with control. Tatziana, Pip, Harvey, James P, Lewis R and Anushka have progressed to the level where they can now lead the team down the mountain and ride safely on all the different ski lifts. Alex H has been consistently good throughout the week and has helped others, as well as Mrs Major, to ski safely and recover after any falls.
Mr Britten’s group skied a red run that was just amazing, everyone speeded from the top all the way down through a valley. We had the whole run to ourselves and nobody fell! This lead us to Rohan’s drag lift and up to the ski park. Mr Britten, sensibly, decided to watch the children attempt massive jumps - chicken! The first jump was won by Oliver P with Isobel 2nd, the second jump was won by Oliver S with Lois and James S tied in second.
Mr Martindale’s group had a leisurely ski across a variety of slopes and practised their 360 turns. Sarah and Jessica have mastered these. The boys of the group seem to prefer the jumps more than the ballet moves!
A interesting aspect to the week has been the failure of the following sentence starter - What ever you do don’t… This has lead to a variety of problems. Whatever you do don’t forget inevitably leads to a 100% failure rate of remembering said item. Whatever you do don’t ski either parallel or snow plough often leads to children either getting stuck skiing up hill or hurtling down the mountain at break neck speed. Jeff told us on the first and probably every day - Whatever you do, don’t take your gloves off on the chair lift. This one simple request was the reason why Rohan spent the afternoon in one glove!
After the afternoon session, we returned the skis to the ski shop and were joined at the hotel by Sophie, Ben and Jeff. The children were given their results from the weeks skiing and certificates and medals were handed out. Each group was awarded a skier of the week by their instructor. There were Alex H, Oliver P and Oliver S (joint) and Sarah.
Preparations for our return
Mrs V will phone Miss V as soon as we land at Manchester. She will then start the phone chains off and, all being well, we will be back at school on time.
Unpacking
Having listened to the children and watched the children pack, be prepared for the following:
Smell, odd socks, other children’s clothes, a large amount of unworn clothes(boys) and absolutely no folded clothes.
A lot of us have very dry lips, no matter how much Vaseline we applied it hasn’t prevented skier’s lip. A ready supply of lip balm may be useful.
Thanks for all the comments and messages throughout the week. The children have been outstanding all week. Their behaviour has been first class. The hotel staff, who see a lot of children during a season, said that we had the best manners of all the children they have had this year.

I have quite a lot of photos and a couple of videos still to upload to the photo album. I’ll put them on the blog when get back to England.thisweekatsalterford@hotmail.com

Friday Morning
Friday Morning
All awake bright and early this morning and down for breakfast at 8.00am. All staff hoping for a relatively incident free day. We have been sharing the hotel with three other schools - all secondary. One school is fairly well known to us - Trent College. They came by coach and are setting off back this afternoon - I don’t envy their journey. This will mean we get the dining room to ourselves this evening and will be able to enjoy a quiet civilised meal - doubtful!
This morning, all three groups were back on the mountain. The snow that fell yesterday has now been ploughed over and the runs are in the best condition we have had all week. A few flakes fell on us as we skied this morning - very picture postcard.
Mr Martindale’s and Mr Britten’s groups skied together for the entire session. This included a final assessment before this evenings presentations. All the children skied well and impressed Sophie and Jeff. We finished the session skiing a black run down together and the arguments continued about which group are the best. It’s obviously Mr Britten’s group but don’t tell the children ;)
The Brittens didn’t have their best morning today. Firstly, Britten senior was standing, minding his own business on the slopes when out of the mist a red jacketed monster came hurtling down the slope and straight into Britten senior’s right leg. Wild laughter and cries of “She fell over!” came from Mr Martindale’s group. I assured Remy I was O.K and didn’t blame him for his maniac skiing. However, there goes his chance of winning skier of the day J
Britten junior had a similar experience. There she was, merrily skiing along a flat, forest track when she was mowed down by Cameron. Tears streamed down her face. The caring words of her father - “Get up you wimp!” - didn’t seem to improve her mood although she did seem fine 30 seconds later skiing with her group. I asked Cameron if he was aware of the saying “You mess with the bull, you get the horns” but he hadn’t J
Mrs Major’s group had an accident free morning, thank goodness. Lewis M’s leg is still a bit sore so he decided to miss the session and stay with Mrs V. There is a Wii in the bar and the last I saw of the pair they were off for a 1v1 Wii Sports Challenge. Lewis refuses to play table football after Mrs V gave him a spanking on Tuesday.
Lunch today was an unusual concoction of turkey, bacon, cheese and breadcrumbs. This came with potato wedges and salad. All was washed down under a mountain of ketchup. I’m sure Amelia’s mum will remember it. Amelia’s Mum had wondered in a message, what the children had been missing, food wise. Chocolate seems high of the list, followed by McDonalds(sigh), Dominos Pizza and a variety of sugary drinks. James S, a cultured gent, is looking forward to a plate of roast duck with roast potatoes.
Jeff
Mr Britten’s group have had Jeff as their instructor throughout the week. He has been fantastic and I’m sure the children will remember his teaching. Islam have the five pillars, Christians have the ten commandments. Jeff’s teaching is the triangle of skiing.(It’s better if you say these in a bad French accent, think Allo, Allo with a touch a Peter Sellers)
Rule 1 - You can not cry and ski at ze same time!
Rule 2 - If you ski straight down, you will break ze legs!
Rule 3 - If you fall down it is your fault, If Jeff falls down it is always someone else’s fault.
By following these three simple lessons, we have all progressed to black slopes and controlled turns. Oliver S’s dad will be sad to hear that no one has said “Bend ze knees” all week.
Thanks again for all the messages, you can still send them to
A couple of jokes for James P’s dad.
Two snowmen in a field, one says can you smell carrots?

Thursday afternoon
Thursday Afternoon and Evening
It snowed!
On our way up the mountain a few little flakes turned into an official blizzard. Visibility was poor and skiing became difficult when the snow settled on the churned up snow from the morning. Unfortunately, this lead to our first main incident of the week. Mrs Major's group were skiing their last run of the day when Lewis M had a pretty bad fall. Ben, the group's instructor, thought it would be best to have a check up at the medical centre and Lewis M was transported down the slope to the village. Mrs Major accompanied Lewis M and Ben skied the group down to the hotel where they were met by Mrs Venables. Mr Martindale contacted parents while Lewis M had an x-ray. Thankfully, Lewis was given the all clear and managed to walk back from the medical centre to the relief of everyone.
Mr Britten's group found the going hard but still managed to ski a red and a couple of blues. James S won skier of the day. At the start of the week he was very much, a beginner. Watching him speed down the red run this afternoon, he is now a fully fledged skier. In other news, Oliver P left his mark on the slopes after getting caught short at a remote part of the mountain. We left the yellow snow behind and caught a chair lift down to meet up with the others.
Mr Martindale's group returned from their ice cream buying excursion to have a full afternoon skiing in the hard conditions. All went well until Alex P did “a Rohan” and broke the same button lift that started “The Legend of Rohan” earlier in the week. Georgia was given skier of the day after performing a textbook side slipping turn after struggling with the move all week. She has asked me to wish someone in her family a Happy Birthday – she's just not sure who!
Mrs Major's group, after their trail along the mountain, did much the same as the morning. The children were also assessed for their end of week presentation. Harvey was awarded skier of the day. He apparently lost his skiing legs on the mountain on Wednesday morning but thankfully found them again on Thursday. I just hope Oliver P didn't find them first.
Evening Meal
Starter Leak and Potato Soup
Main Fish, chips and peas
Dessert Corneto
The evening activity was swimming in Briancon. This was a fun pool with a slide, water jets, rapids and fountains. There was also a standard 25m swimming pool which was completely ignored by all. The coach on the way back played Happy Feet on the TV screens and we all joined in with the songs.
Tomorrow, the children will ski for the last time and have a presentation evening with their instructors.
Thursday 14th April
Forget to mention the skiers of the day for yesterday. Harry I, who seems convinced he is in the wrong group despite being told by his instructor Sophie that he isn't, won skier of the day for Mr Martindale's group after an outstanding display on the ski park and good all round skiing throughout the day. Mr Britten had a very tough decision between Cameron, who was taken out by a snowboarder but carried on regardless, and Ben, who skied an entire day without falling once. In the end , it went to Cameron for his bravery and determination to not let one bad experience spoil his day. Mrs Major's chose Alex H. Alex H has been tremendous all week. Yesterday was just the icing on the cake after the experience higher up the mountain.
It's getting harder and harder to pick a skier of the day. We could chose all the children. They are a credit to the school.
Another prize handed out last night was for the most amusing moment of the day. This was won by Rohan who managed to ski into a hole next to a pylon, disappear for what seemed like minutes, and emerge at the other side. He was awarded the silly hat and received a huge cheer.
Thanks again for all the messages, the children may looked deeply appalled at all the gushing sentiments but we know they love hearing them.
For Harry B's mum. We showed him the photo you sent of his new bedroom.
I know you worked really hard on it but he didn't seem that impressed!
For James P, we have found the perfect sign:
Although, I think Cameron and Harvey need the reminder more than James P does.

Morning
A strange substance arrived at breakfast this morning - porridge! It had the children fleeing in all directions. Thankfully, it was closely followed by cornflakes and the pandemonium died down.
Mrs Major’s group continue to get special treatment with a bus to the slopes while the rest of have to walk.
All three Salterford groups went up the mountain this morning. Mr Martindale’s group skied over to Italy in search of a decent ice-cream. They are now only allowed to use parallel skis which hasn’t proved to be a problem. Mr Britten’s group went down their first black run. Very few falls and all the children celebrated at the bottom which drew some funny looks from the locals but we didn’t care. It was a special moment and it deserved a good scream! Mrs Major’s group went back up the mountain and did their first mountain trail. Since it got colder, the blue and green runs on top of the mountain are in a much more beginner friendly condition. This meant the children got a taste of speed in a safe environment.
Apparently, the email address has posed a small number of people problems. We have had a steady stream of messages all week and enjoyed reading them all. If you want to send any more its

Lunch - The jacket potatoes have regained control in the kitchen and made their belated arrival this lunch time. A choice of tuna, cheese or both along with salad, bread, butter and dressing.
The Legend Of Rohan
Rohan’s fame continues to spread around the resort. This morning, we skied quietly passed a group of snowboarders only to have “It’s Rohan!” screamed in our ears. One gentlemen was so keen to get a closer look at the legendary figure that he skied straight into him, fell over, got up and then thanked Rohan for the experience of a lifetime. “I’ll never clean these skis again” he yelled back as he skied off down the slope.
Ski Lifts
Ben W invented a new way of getting onto a chair lift. It’s a similar move to “The Isobel” but instead of placing you hand in the way of the safety bar you place your right leg.
Room Inspection
Hannah, Pip, Georgia and Anushka continue to lead the way although the others did show signs of improvement. Harry B has had an offer of help from his personal assistant back home called Rosie, while Isobel and our Rosie have decided that tidying your rooms is not for them and have scored badly again.

Wednesday Afternoon and Evening
Wednesday 13th Afternoon and Evening
Lunch was supposed to be jacket potato, beans, cheese and tuna. Unfortunately something had gone wrong. The potatoes had escaped their jackets and reformed into potato salad. The cheese had hijacked some sausage rolls too. What we were left with was cheese pasties, potato salad, coleslaw, cucumber and tomato. What is strange is that food has become less about likes and dislikes and more about seeing how many of our depleted calories we can replace in 30 minutes. I’m sure when the children return they will soon be back to their old fussy ways!
Mrs Major’s group returned to slightly easier slopes after the adrenaline excesses of the morning. Jumps were constructed and they have the pleasure of having the whole slope to themselves.
Mr Martindale’s group returned to the ski park in search of massive air! The winner of the biggest jump competition was won by Harry I who forget about health and safety and totally went for it! They spent the afternoon meeting Mr Britten’s group just long enough for Mr Martindale to criticise his fellow teacher’s ability before leaving him under a pile of snow.
Mr Britten’s group were hampered by the old man of the group lagging behind at the back. At the start of the week he could fall back on the excuse that he was helping any fallers. Now that the group have stopped falling over, he really needs to think of a better excuse. Never, in the history of man, has a 2ft 6inch hot bath been so longingly looked forward too!
Evening Meal
Starter - Red Pepper Soup
Main - Chicken Pie, Sauté potatoes, green beans
Dessert - Toffee Éclairs
Evening entertainment was a quiz. Some children looked so tired, I think write your name at the top is testing some of them. Another challenge the children have had to face was the “after eight eating competition”. This involved placing an after eight mint on your forehead and eating it without using your hands. Harvey won this with an amazing display. Pictures to follow - hopefully.
Some statistics from the week. We have received 47 messages so far! There has been over a thousand views of the blog.

Wednesday Morning
Wednesday 13th April
Morning Report
Breakfast was the same as usual. I think some of us are starting to yearn for a bacon cob with brown sauce. Maybe just me!
All three groups took the chair lift up to 1400m. The weather is now officially cold. It was 0c at the top but with the wind chill it felt more like -20c. It was fine when we were skiing but sitting on a chair lift being ripped to shreds by the wind was no fun. It is, however, still very sunny without a cloud in the sky - Sun cream is still being applied liberally.
Mrs Majors’ group took a big step, in terms of difficulty today. A long challenging run was attacked with a variety of styles along with a few wobbles. Some children had to conquer their fears on slopes steeper than what they have been used to.
Mr Britten’s group and Mr Martindale’s group took very similar routes to Chantermerle. The runs today were harder, in terms of ice, with a small covering of snow. It was great fun. Remy, Oliver P and Oliver S lead one group whilst Alex P, Sarah and Jessica lead the other. The children are getting so good at skiing it’s much harder for the old men at the back to keep up. If we were here for another week, I’d seriously struggle to keep up!
Salterford Guide to Ski Lifts
At the resort, there are two main type of ski lift.
Type 1 - The button lift. These involve placing a plastic button shape between your legs which is attached to a cable that drags you up the slope. They should be a relatively trouble free way of getting to the top of a slope. However, over the week the Salterford children have found a variety of different ways to mess this up.
Method One - The James S Release - This involves waiting until you are in the worst possible place to let go and then allow you skis to slowly slide backwards down the slope.
Method Two - The Lewis M Ski Cross - This involves standing waiting for the lift with skis in a perfect X. As soon as the lift drags you forward, you are guaranteed to have your first taste of snow as you are dragged face down up the slope - Not recommended!
Method Three - The Rohan - See previous day
Method Four - The Cameron Shuffle - Once you have mastered the button lift, the journey up can be a little bit boring. Why not let go of the pole and have a little boogie on your ways up. V. Bad Idea. A little boogie goes a long way to perform a combination of the Lewis M and the James S and leaves the performer with a mouthful of snow and a chorus of “FAIL” from any children watching.
Type 2 - The chair lift. These involve standing between red lines waiting for a chair to arrive from behind which is sat upon and a safety bar is pulled over. A far more comfortable way of travelling but still fraught with potential hazards.
Method 1 - The Isobel - Make sure you always put your hand directly in the space where the safety bar comes down. This will guarantee at the very least crushed fingers.
Method 2 - The Oliver P - Instead of skiing to the chair lift, try crawling. Guaranteed to annoy any French chair lift operator. There are always positives to this move.
Method 3 - The Remy - Why get on the ski lift with two skis? That's far too obvious. Best to leave one behind and carry on up the mountain with just the one!
Method 4 - The Random Guy - Puts the fear of God into any Salterford pupil., having to share a chair lift with “Some Random Guy!”. Solutions put forward by some include - the James S (Don’t speak), the Faith (Pretend to be asleep!), The Remy(Pretend to be French) and the Britten(Try to make polite conversation in French for 30 seconds followed by 8 minutes of hand gestures, facial ticks and dignified silence)

Tuesday Ski Trip Afternoon
Tuesday Afternoon
After lunch we headed back to the slopes with ski jackets on for the first time. The temperature has cooled slightly and with the added wind chill it is definitely colder at the top of the mountain. Some hard cases like Faith and Harry B complained bitterly about having to wear a coat but I’m sure they were glad they did once we sat on the chair lift.
Mr Martindale’s group had plenty of falls on the black runs, their new side slipping skills came in very handy. Slow and steady ruled the slopes as only Hannah and Georgia survived the afternoon without falling over. This group are progressing at such a rapid rate that they are running out of slopes that they haven’t tackled. Jessica, Alex, Josh and Harry I are begging for another visit to the snow park. Oliver B wants to break Josh W.C altitude record.
Mr Britten’s group successfully tackled their first red run with few problems. Everybody fell in a variety of ways but still managed to keep smiling and eager for the next challenge. They also had their first experience of the ski park, Remy went for “massive air” as did Cameron and Oliver S. Ben W, James S and Faith went for a more controlled approach and landed softly with great style. Rohan’s fame is spreading - even the French are joining in. However, Oliver P must take credit today for stopping the chair lift. Lying on the floor in front of it is apparently not the best way to get on!
Mrs Major had fun on the slopes with the skiing version of Total Wipeout. Jumping over ramps, ducking under ski poles and rolling in snow. They have been promised a chauffeur driven trip to slopes. Honestly, some would do anything to avoid carrying their skis half an mile down the road!
Dinner tonight was French Onion Soup, Lasagne and Salad, Pancakes
Cameron, James S, Harry B and James P set a new record for speed eating. Their lasagne was eaten before any of the other children were served.
As promised, some children have written a message home.
To my family,

Tuesday Morning Ski Holiday
Tuesday 12th April Ski Holiday morning
Breakfast at the hotel is at 8.00am each morning. This morning, all rooms had to be woken by staff to ensure they would be up in time. Are we finally tiring them out? Breakfast is a buffet system which requires the children to collect their breakfast from a central area and carry it back to the table. A skill which the children need to learn is the ability to carry a bowl of cornflakes without spilling milk on your shoes. It should be a simple operation, but isn’t. If on their return, you find a milk stained trainer or rogue cornflake inside a sock - you will know exactly where this has come from.
All three groups went off in different directions this morning. Mr Martindale’s group had some parallel turning drills to master. Mr Britten’s group skied 10km over the mountain to Chantermerle, some fantastic scenery and great skiing by everyone. Mrs Major’s group have progressed onto harder slopes. Alex, Pip, Amelia, Rosie, Isabella, Tatziana and Anushka are now skiing beautifully with poise and control. James P, Lewis M, Lewis R and Harvey are thrill seekers looking bigger jumps, steeper slopes and tighter corners. All they need to do is to perfect stopping!
Lunch brought the unusual sight of Mrs V tucking into chicken nuggets and chips. I’m sure she asked the waiter what part of the chicken was its nugget! Surprise, surprise the children attacked their plates and were soon ready for the highlight of the day - Room inspection.
A new saying has been invented by the group. Yesterday, Rohan managed to break the button lift. It was completely accidental but ever since if we see a broken lift the children say that someone has “Done a Rohan!” Rohan is delighted with this new found fame. Even when the chairlift broke halfway up the mountain, the sound echoed around from Briancon to Villeneuve “Someone’s done a Rohan!”
Still no injuries to report, sun cream is being applied before each session and the children all have a healthy rosy glow.

Monday afternoon and evening
After an hours chill out time we headed back to the slopes. Legs are beginning to feel the effects of skiing, at least with Mr Britten and Mr Martindale. All three groups headed up the mountain and found plenty of snow to practise on. Mrs Major's group skied a long slope with plenty of opportunity to fall over. This was grabbed with both hands! Every child had at least one spectacular fall but bounced straight up again hungry for more. This quality is very impressive in novice skiers - as the saying goes "If you're not falling, you're not learning." Amelia L was awarded the skier of the day for this group after displaying grit and determination throughout the day.
Mr Britten's group had their first experience of the 4 man chair lift. It was an experience that one young man will never forget. Just as the chair lift was pulling away from base camp, Remy's ski got caught up in a mound of snow and fell off. He continued the rest of the journey on one ski and even managed to ski off the lift at the end - on one ski! Mr Martindale's group, following behind, reunited Remy with his ski and the group sped on. Remy continued to display unorthodox skiing throughout the afternoon including skiing backwards 50m before expertly turning to face down the slope. Mr Britten rewarded Remy with skier of the day for his positive attitude throughout all his trials.
Mr Martindale's group continued to ski on the higher slopes. Josh WC rejoined the group after re-entry and they spent the afternoon on various blue, red and black runs. Jessica, Sarah, Harry I, Harry B, Alex, Oliver B and Josh WC spent the lessons trying to break the land speed record while Hannah and Georgia seem to see a black run as the perfect place to have a cosy chat as they skied down. Mr Martindale chose Sarah as his skier of the day for her leadership qualities, positive attitude and all round superstar skiing.
Evening Meal
Starter - Vegetable Soup
Main - Pork, roasted potatoes, sweet corn and broccoli
Dessert - Raspberry panna cotta with fresh cream
This meal was a true indicator of how hard the children are working. Clean plates were the order of the day with many declaring it "The Best Meal EVER!" The dessert definitely made an early play for "pudding of the week"
Evening Activity
Tonight, our evening entertainment was Bum Boarding. This is basically hurtling down a hill on a small plastic shovel, trying hard not to do any of the following - 1. Fall Off 2. Roll Over 3. Spin Round 4. Eat Snow 5. Run Anybody Over
In one amazing run, Lois managed to do all five in one move! Everybody enjoyed the activity, especially Mr Britten who will be encouraging Seb Coe to include the event in the 2012 Olympics. At last an event one can do well whilst sitting down!
After an hour of thrills and spills we retreated to the hotel for a well deserved pint of hot chocolate. The children went to bed at 9.30pm after Mrs Venables told them the results of the room inspection. For the record - they were the lowest scores ever, but I'm sure Mrs Venables said that last time \;) So far Georgia, Hannah, Pip and Anushka's room leads the way with a score of 5/10!
Thanks for all the messages and even some quiz questions. There are some new photos at

Ski Holiday Monday Morning
I have uploaded 4 photos to a photobucket album, it took just over an hour for the pictures. I will try to add more tonight and repost the link.
http://s138.photobucket.com/albums/q269/cairocat/Ski%20Holiday%202011/
Breakfast is basically the same everyday, so there is plenty of opportunity to fill up before tackling the slopes. This morning, all the group went higher in search of snow. Mr Martindale's group experienced the 4 seater chair lift whilst the others used the 4 man cable car. It is still very hot and most of us are only wearing one or two layers with our ski trousers. However, snow is forecast for tomorrow! If it comes, it will be very welcome and should ease the queues at the lifts. Highlight of the day so far has to be Josh W-C attempting to become the first skier in space. He was last seen taking off over one of the jumps. We expect him to land before tea! The beginners are making great progress and it is difficult to believe they are the same children we saw on the slopes only 24 hours ago. Oliver S, Cameron and Remy have been perfecting their jump turns with Mr Britten's group. Faith, Ben W and Rohan have mastered the turn part, now they need to jump.
Lunch - Cheese and ham toastie, salad, bread. I know there is a french word for this, however after a conversation I had with an 8 year old girl this morning on the slope I am only fully aware of how pathetic my French is.
Mr Britten - Bonjour!
Girl - Are you English? (How did she know?)
Mr Britten - Vous anglais c'est tres bien!
Girl - Your French isn't!
We are setting out earlier this afternoon to get the best of the snow before it turns slushy. More updates later. Still all injury free! Long may it last.
Thanks again for all the messages. The children really enjoy hearing about events back home and seem amused by how many pets are sending best wishes.

Ski Holiday Day 2 Afternoon and Evening
Due to the warm temperatures, skiing in the afternoon was tricky. However, the children made great progress and skied solidly for two hours. Mrs Major's group worked on a longer slope than the morning and ended the session practising slalom turns. Lewis was awarded the "Skier of the Day" for the group, mainly down to his determination to persevere and not let the slopes beat him.
Mr Britten's group saw the first competitive action of the week. A parallel slalom competition. After gaining confidence racing each other, Oliver P, Ben, and Mr Britten challenged another school and ended the competition winning 3-0. Skier of the day for this group was awarded to Lois who skied with poise and purpose for the whole of the day.
Mr Martindale's group ventured higher up the mountain in search of excitement. They skied down many challenging slopes and even had time for a few jumps. Oliver B was awarded "skier of the day" for skiing safely with very few falls.
All the children returned safely to the hotel tired but injury free. Some notable spills included Harvey, who became so attached his button drag lift he refused to let go - until he hit the fence at the end of the lift! Harry I, who disappeared down a hole next to a drag lift and Cameron, who discovered the difficulty of skiing on brown snow - or soil as we call it back home!
Evening Meal - Carrot and corriander soup, sauasage, mash and green beans, chocolate mouse.
The evening was spent exploring the town. A quiz provided by the hotel was won by Mrs Major's team with a perfect score of 15, even though the quiz was out of 14! We demand a recount! Mrs |Venables team grabbed the wooden spoon was a gloriously awful 9/15. Must try harder!

Thank you for all the messages so far. They have been passed on to the children and any general comments have been read to all the children.
Ski Holiday Day 2 Morning
Breakfast - bread, croissant, cornflakes, muesli, ham, cheese, jam, honey and yoghurt.
This morning the children experienced the slopes for the first time. Weather is glorious, perfect weather for surfing! Skiing is possible on all slopes, although the lower slopes only have a few cms.
The first morning, as usual, was a time to discover our "ski legs". Some of us are still looking for them :) The children have been put into three groups according to experience and ability. Mrs |Major reported a good morning with the beginners with very few falls - I'm not sure I believe her judging by the state of some children's trousers! I spent the morning with the advanced beginners so we had plenty of falls, sulks, smiles and collisions. Happily, no injuries to report. We have a mad Frenchman as our instructor with a very English name - Jeff! He has the patience of a saint and I'm sure the children will make rapid progress. Mr Martindale took the experienced group along with an attractive French lady - he assures me he spent the morning focussed on the groups skiing ability ;) All the children came back with tales of parallel turns, skiing backwards and waiting for Mr Martindale while he recovered from a spectacular fall. I'm sure he, along with the children, will make good progression in the capable arms of his instructor.
Lunch - burger, chips and salad. By far, the most popular meal so far! We will be back out on the slopes this afternoon.
I will try to upload some photos this evening. The internet connection is verrrry slooooow and uploading a photo proved impossible last night :(

Ski Holiday Day 1
We have arrived safely at the hotel after a trouble free journey. Despite the 3.45am meet, the children were lively all the way to Manchester. We checked in with two delightful Monarch airline staff and the "wicked witch of the north west" She seemed convinced that Isabella was a undercover terroist travelling with false papers and a cunning disguise. Mrs Venables was able to reassure the airline with an stern voice and Isabella was waved through.
The flight took off on time and we were soon soaring over Paris with a breakfast of sausage, beans and hash browns inside us.
Grenoble was warm and sunny, some children thought we had taken a wrong turn - "How can we possibly ski here!" Little did they know, there was still a three hour coach journey ahead of them.
We arrived at the hotel at 3.00pm and tucked into a "light" lunch of bacon and cheese pasta bake, salad and bread.
Since then, we have all been fitted with skis, boots, helmets and poles and have opted for an early night. After being awake for sixteen hours, there were very few complaints.
Please send any friendly messages and we will pass them on to the children. Use the email address provided.

Tommy Taylor
This morning we had a visitor at school. Tommy Taylor, former professional footballer, came to assembly to tell the children about speedmark. For those old enough to remember, Tommy was a West Ham player in the 1970s.
Tommy played at West Ham for 9 seasons and played 340 times, scoring 8 goals. His greatest honour came during the 1974-75 season when he was part of the F.A Cup winning team who beat Fulham 2-0. Bobby Moore, England's World Cup winning captain, was on the losing team that day.
The 1975 West Ham United team are the last all-English team to win the FA Cup.

Sunday 10th April On this day in 1970, Paul McCartney announced that The Beatles had split up.
Why is there a picture of the North Pole on the board this week?
Last week there was a picture of the Eiffel Tower. Ben W (Year 5) correctly worked out that it was March 31, 1889 when the tower was opened. It was only supposed to be there for 20 years! When it first opened most Parisians hated it. Novelist Guy de Maupassant—who claimed to hate the tower —supposedly ate lunch in the Tower's restaurant every day. When asked why, he answered that it was the one place in Paris where one could not see the structure.
Puzzle of the week
Yet again, no children worked out the puzzle of the week. Mr Martindale did though! Are they too difficult? Only Georgia in year 5 has managed to work one out. Can you work out this week's puzzle?
12 members were present at a board meeting. Each member shook hands with all of the other members before & after the meeting. How many hand shakes were there?
Ned's Joke of the Week
What did the alien say to the petrol pump?
'Take your finger out of your ear when I am taking to you!' ...
