Woolsthorpe Manor in Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth, near Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, is the birthplace and was the family home of Sir Isaac Newton. He was born there on 25 December 1642 (old calendar). At that time it was a yeoman's farmstead, principally rearing sheep.

Newton returned here in 1666 when Cambridge University closed due to the plague, and here he performed many of his most famous experiments, most notably his work on light and optics. This is also said to be the site where Newton, observing an apple fall from a tree, was inspired to formulate his law of universal gravitation.

Now in the hands of the National Trust and open to the public all year round, it is presented as a typical seventeenth century yeoman's farmhouse (or as near to that as possible, taking into account modern living, health and safety requirements and structural changes that have been made to the house since Newton's time).

New areas of the house, once private, were opened up to the public in 2003, with the old rear steps (that once led up to the hay loft and grain store and often seen in drawings of the period) being rebuilt, and the old walled kitchen garden, to the rear of the house, being restored.

One of the former farmyard buildings has been equipped so that visitors can have hands-on experience of the physical principles investigated by Newton in the house.

 ISA National Swimming Gala

From the Nottingham Evening Post

Three speedy schoolchildren will pit their front crawl against the best swimmers in the country as part of a national competition
Pupils William Merritt, Joshua Leivers and Isabel Smith have been picked to represent the Midlands this month at the Independent Schools Association (ISA) National Swimming Finals.
The youngsters, who attend Salterford House School in Calverton, were put through to the nationals after picking up top marks at regional qualifiers in November.
The competition takes place at the Aquatics Centre in The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London, on Saturday, January 24.

The school was among 25 from across the region taking part, with the three swimmers pipping dozens of competitors to the post.
William, 9, from Ravenshead, came first in the boys year four freestyle swim and will take part in the year four boys freestyle and freestyle relay.
He is practicing seven days a week between school and his swimming club in the run-up to the big event.
He said: “I’ve looked at some of the past scores from the competition - some of them can swim as fast as my dad
“If I was to win it would make me feel like I was king of the world.
“I don’t know what I would do if I won, I would be so lost with myself.”
Isabel, 8, from Farnsfield, came first in the girls year four back stroke and will be representing the Midlands in the same event at the gala.
She said: “I’ve been swimming about five times a week.
“The regional was a bit scary, it was the second biggest gala I’ve ever been, it was really big.
“If I was to win at this event It would be amazing - I want to be an Olympic swimmer when I grow up.”
Joshua, 9, from Woodborough, has been swimming since he was four and is in the reserves for breast stroke after picking up second in the regional heats.
He added: “I used to be afraid of the water.
“After a while I just started to learn that I could actually swim and I didn’t have to worry at all.
“I am amazed that I could have a chance to go into an Olympic swimming pool with all of the champions that have competed there.”
Headteacher Marla Venables said: “It’s a great success and a great start to the year.
“We’re all very proud of what they’ve done and how well they have behaved throughout it all.”
