Sport Workout

Well done to everyone who took part in the sponsored workout on Friday afternoon.  Everyone worked very hard.  We were all impressed by the younger members of the school who mixed with the older children and completed all the physical tasks.

If anyone wants to take it further - Try the workout on the video below.

More photos from the farm

Day Four with photos

We have spent the morning at Ruth's farm.  Ruth has a mixed farm on the Yorkshire Wolds.  At the moment, she is growing barley and rape seed.  She also has English Long Horn cows which produce high quality steaks for the restaurant industry.
The breed of cow are very well behaved and the children will allowed to get up close and personal to the herd.  Ruth is a very straight talking Yorkshire woman who has a wealth of knowledge about animal husbandry.  After this morning, so do the children.
Ruth's bull has become something of a local celebrity after appearing in the latest Dad's Army movie.

The afternoon was spent around the fire pit.  The children collected fire wood and used flint to light a piece of cotton wool.  The cotton wool was then used by the Cranedale staff to light the fire pit.  The children would have basically been happy to spend the entire afternoon burning cotton wool but there was a practical reason for the fire lighting.  A lesson about the "Carbon Cycle" and the importance of sustainability followed.  The children then made their own charcoal which was later used in an art session in the classroom.

Day Three

Today, we have spent most of the day on the North Yorkshire Moors.  The children were taken by minibus and walked down a valley, following a dry river channel until they finally found water at the bottom.
Once in the valley, the children measured the river's velocity using a very technical piece of equipment - a rubber duck named Jeffery.
After, the children collected samples from the water and identified various creatures using a tree diagram and key.  Some groups found water nymphs, some found flies, one group even found a fish!
It was another glorious day.  The sun shone all day and many of us are looking "sun-kissed".
The group then learnt an important science lesson - What goes down, must go up!  The pleasurable walk down the valley turned into a mountain trek back up to the minibus.  It was so steep, it could be called "character building".  It could also be called "A calf screaming, heart pounding hell climb".
This evenings meal was lasagne, salad and garlic bread.  It was followed by apple crumble and custard.  It was very popular and many had seconds and thirds.

Some photos...

Day two

After a very quiet night, most children were wide awake and ready for breakfast this morning. Unfortunately, they were two hours too early for it. When eight o'clock eventually arrived, the children tucked into cereal, toast, fruit and a full English breakfast.
The day has been spent on the beach at Flamborough Head.  The children have been studying landforms at the coast, searching for crabs in rock pools and eating ice cream.
The journey back to the Centre was very quiet. This quiet was only disturbed by the sound of snoring from most of the passengers.
A strange phenomenon then occurred. There was a queue for the showers - the boys showers!  The dining room has an unusual  smell of pine, lemon and musk.

Day one

A quick message from my phone.  I hope to be able to write more later if I can get my laptop online.
We had a very wet journey here and spent most of the trip looking for blue sky.
Fortunately, we found plenty of sunshine this afternoon.
The children have been taking part in various team building activities and orienteering.  Alice and Sebastian won the orienteering pairs event.
Evening meal was stew and dumplings, banoffee pie, cheese, biscuits and mushroom soup.  Not in that order.
Please pass this news on to as many Salterford parents as you can.
Many thanks
Mr B and Miss V

Shame about the rain on Friday but it didn't stop us from celebrating the Queen's birthday.  The children made kites, cakes, flags and crowns.  The cake sale was incredibly popular and the produce sold like ... hot cakes!  The bake-off competition was fierce.  Even Mary Berry would have been impressed.
