Big Schools' Birdwatch is a simple activity that gets you and your class closer to the birds visiting your school grounds.
Taking just one hour, the Birdwatch can be carried out in school, or by visiting a local outdoor space. The Birdwatch works across a wide age and ability range and there's plenty of flexibility to run it how you like. It could be a simple stand alone activity, or the centrepiece of cross-curricular studies, project work or as part of work to improve your school grounds.
This year, Big Schools' Birdwatch will take place in the two weeks from 21 January - 1 February 2013. You can do your Birdwatch in any hour within those weeks.

Important notes

This will require adult help with cutting. Be aware of nut allergies.

Steps

Cut a hole in the side large enough to allow a free flow of seeds, but in such a way that it won’t all fall out on the ground in the slightest puff of wind, and won’t get wet if it rains.
Make a recycled bird feeder - Step 1
Make a few small holes in the bottom of your feeder to allow any rainwater to drain away.
Make a recycled bird feeder - Step 2
Hang it with wire, or even strong string from a tree or your washing line.
Make a recycled bird feeder - Step 3
If your feeder starts to wear out or the food in it goes mouldy, recycle it and make another one!
Remember to keep your feeders well stocked, especially in winter. Birds come to rely on them and will go hungry if you forget.
