Ski Trip Day 7 Evening

Ski Trip Day 7 Evening

Dinner

Starter Tomato and basil soup

Main Cold meat selection, potatoes and salad

Dessert Apple tart with cream

Skiers of the day

Annabelle – For continuing to try hard and look for ways to improve.

Tatziana – Excellent attitude all week and style on the slopes.

“The beret of shame”

There were numerous candidates this evening. Dylan for skiing more on his bottom than on his skis, Katie for clattering people with her ski poles, Rosemary for forgetting her ski pass, Cameron for his choice of attire on the final evening, Jessica S and Macy for never doing anything wrong and James for desperately trying to “win” the beret of shame all week long. However, this morning someone got out of bed on the wrong side and the rest of us had to suffer. A popular saying this week has been – “We like Ninjas not whingers!” For this reason, the beret tonight went to Lois. Not only did she spend the last day moaning, she also skied into a 200 year old larch tree which suffered some cuts and minor bruising.

Room inspection

The final results were handed out this evening. The children in last place were Callum, Jack, Henry and Dylan. All four boys were given a “bag of shame” to help with their rooms at home. The winners were Tatziana, Anushka and Jessica K. Their room has been like a palace all week. They received a box of continental chocolates to share for their superb effort.

Skiers of the week

Christian and DiDi chose two children, one from each group as their skiers of the week. The children chosen were Rosemary and Jessica K.

Ski Trip Day 7

Ski Trip Day 7

Breakfast was the usual with the option to have porridge for a change. A grand total of zero children opted for the porridge option.

Today is the last day of skiing. Most of the day has been spent on some familiar runs, enjoying the scenery and avoiding any injuries – Hoorah!

Highlights of the day

Rosemary joining Christian’s group after a ski pass mishap. She coped very well and didn’t fall over once.

Henry’s smile despite falling over numerous times. However, when he fell after attempting to cause a mini-avalanche with his ski pole, there was little sympathy.

Katie hitting three children, two adults and a door with her ski poles. “It wasn’t my fault!”

Mr Britten falling over for the first time this week. Serves him right for attempting (showing off) to ski on one ski.

The presentation ceremony where the children received their progress cards.

The look on Rosemary’s face when Christian asked her for a kiss! “I am always looking for an English girlfriend but never have any luck” moaned Christian.

Lunch

Starter Chicken soup

Main Jacket potato with cheese, tuna, coleslaw or beans, salad, yoghurt, fruit

The children have been given their remaining euros and are going out shopping for souvenirs. Don’t be surprised if the come home with a snow globe and their own body weight in pick and mix.

The evening entertainment is luge. Looks a lot of fun.

Report of the evening meal, luge, skier of the day, “beret of shame” and the winners of the tidiest room later…

James

To Mummy, Daddy and Jerome
Having a great time.  The activities in the evening are great, especially bum boarding.  My roommates are Jess and Nuks and they're always making me laugh.
Love you lots.  Can't wait to see yoo
Byyye

Dinner

Starter Mini pizza with salad

Main Meatballs in a curry sauce, rice, green beans

Dessert Raspberry pana cotta

The evening entertainment was karaoke. There was numerous renditions of classic songs. Jessie sang American Pie, Anushka was the Dancing Queen, Francesca was Footloose and Mr Britten walked 500 miles. We also had two supergroups. The boys sang? I’m a believer and the girls sang I will survive. It was great fun and all the children joined in.

Skiers of the day

Callum, who finally joined the parallel posse and impressed on the slalom course

Macy, who skied fantastically all day and never put a foot wrong

“The beret of shame”

Each day, the children come home at 11.30am for lunch. There is a rack for everyone skis. Each room has its own rack to avoid confusion after lunch. Mr Martindale and Mr Britten could not believe their eyes when they went to rack their skis. Someone had placed skis in their rack. Who would have the temerity to use the teacher’s rack. The culprit was easy to trace. Each pair of skis has a code number. On the door to the ski store there is a list of all the children with all their codes next to their name. After working out who was responsible, the teachers tracked down the guilty one. “Why are your skis on the teacher’s rack?” “It was empty so I just left my skis there!” For this heinous crime, the beret was placed on Danielle’s head who posed for photos wearing it.

Ski Trip Day 6

Ski Trip Day 6

Max wore the “beret of shame” at breakfast and seemed quite reluctant to return it.

Breakfast

The usual continental breakfast with a hot dog twist. The children threatened mutiny at one point until the pain au chocolate arrived and Francesca stood the troops down.

Today’s skiing was based around an examination. Each child was required to ski a slalom course using all the skills they have acquired during the week. Didi and Christian stood at the bottom of the course and assessed each child’s run.

Lunch

Pea soup, shepherd pie, carrots, peas, salad, yoghurt and fresh fruit.

Highlights of the day.

Katie crashing into a stationary Jessie and Lois and them blaming them for the accident.

Mr Martindale spentding10 minutes searching for his rucksack only to find it on his back.

James looking wide wake after a good 13 hours sleep!

Sarah taking out half of her ski group with a mistimed hockey stop.

Quotes from Christian

“I can’t see where I am going so follow me down this mountain”

“Some of the children are now very good skiers – Don’t tell them I said that!”

Quotes from the children

“Mr Britten, are you wearing Santa’s boots?” Rosemary

“Parp!” Dylan

“That was a fake one!” James, through the fumes.

“I can only skate on my skates” Cameron (Getting his excuses in early!)

Ski Trip Day 5 Evening

Ski Trip Day 5 Evening

Dinner

Starter French Onion Soup

Main Fish, chips and peas

Dessert Strawberry Corneto

This evening, we were supposed to be having a Karaoke night. Unfortunately, due to Mr Martindale’s sore throat, it has been delayed to allow time for his “singing” voice to return. And I thought the year six girls were the divas! In typical Salterford style, the children decided that they would put on a talent show. Danielle organised the judges (Jack, Annabelle and Danielle) and George compared the show with help from Cameron. We were treated so an epic show with singing (Anushka, Jessie, Jessica K, Tatziana), magic (Mrs Martindale and Jessica S) and comedy (Francesca). We were also promised a special dance act. All the acts received a huge cheer but the biggest cheer was saved for the special dance act. It came as a bit of a surprise when George announced that Mr Britten and Mr Martindale would be performing a special one-off version of Gangnam Style! Never, in the history of dance, has there been such a spectacle.

It all came down to the judges. In an outrageous twist, Mr Britten and Mr Martindale did not win. “I haven’t felt this bad about a talent show since Wagner was kicked off the X-Factor” wailed Mr Britten. The overall winner was Anushka, for her rendition of “My heart will go on”.

Room Inspection

Every day, the children’s room are inspected by Mrs Martindale. She takes the job very seriously. On the first day she found unmade beds, smelly socks on the floor and toilet seats left up! The boys’ rooms were even worse. However, since the first day, standards have improved dramatically. The hotel staff said that they have never had a school with such immaculate rooms. The score are very close and only three points separates first from last. Jessica, Tatziana and Anushka have a slight lead but it could all change by the end of the week.

Skiers of the day

Jack for determination to improve.

Macy for her style and courage on all slopes.

“The beret of shame”

Many candidates again today. Jessie for her slalom catastrophe, Annabelle for attempting to hide the beret at breakfast, Francesca for her Kamikaze skiing and Max for skiing into a fence and attempting to ski backwards without actually moving. The “beret of shame” was awarded this evening to Max who wore it with pride for the rest of the evening.

Ski Trip Day 5

Ski Trip Day 5

Annabelle attempted to sneak into breakfast with “The beret of shame”. Unfortunately for her, hiding the beret under her hoodie was always going to be spotted. Who will get it today? It’s a bit like Nanny McPhee – those who want it -never get it and those that get it - never want it.

Breakfast –cornflakes, rice crispies, French bread, croissant, pain au chocolat, fresh fruit, yoghurt, porridge and bacon sandwiches.

Skiing Report

A bit of musical chairs today. Mr Britten and Mr Martindale skied with different groups and were both impressed with the rapid progress the children have made. The weather is still perfect. Blue sky, sunshine, no wind and all the runs are open. We have been so lucky, it is by far the best conditions we have ever had.

Lunch – Chicken pie and chips, red pepper soup, yoghurt and fruit. There was also the first appearance of the week of tomato ketchup. Danielle and Rosemary declared it was the best lunch so far!

Highlights of the day

Mr Britten’s group returned to the slalom racing course. Children raced in pairs and all was going well until Lois raced Jessie. The idea of slalom is quite simple. You can either turn left around a gate or turn right around a gate. Jessie had other ideas. She didn’t turn left but she didn’t turn right either. Jessie went straight into the red gate. She managed to pull the entire gate 20metres down the course. A ski park worker was very close to the accident and ran quickly across the slope to repair his precious slalom course. Jessie was a little shaken – “I saw red, then white then black” However, it wasn’t long before she was back on the chair lift singing Eternal Flame and ready for the next challenge.

In the afternoon, the teachers swapped groups and both groups headed to the top of the mountain. The weather forecast tomorrow is for snow and the instructors were keen to get the groups to the top in case there is a problem with visibility tomorrow. Christian accused Mr Britten of never smiling while he skis. It was politely explained that he was far too busy concentrating on not breaking his legs to think about smiling. The children’s skiing has definitely improved. Dylan and Max have realised the importance of standing up on their skis, James is speeding ahead of the instructor and Francesca is now able to stop and only crash into one other skier instead of the usual six. Their instructor is called Didi. He decided that the children had mastered skiing forwards and gave them a lesson in skiing backwards. It was tremendous fun and Macy and Jessica seemed happier not being able to see where they were going. Anushka and Tatziana are getting very close to becoming members of the “parallel posse”. Some children have joined, some are close to joining and others are… really nice children ;)

More fun and games later with the usual awards and a report of the evening’s entertainment.

Day 4 Ski Trip Evening

Day 4 Ski Trip Evening

Dinner

Starter – Cheese pasty with salad

Main – Sausage casserole, mashed potato and green beans

Dessert – Chocolate sponge with custard

The evening entertainment tonight was a combination of table football and pool. The children played in pairs in a knockout competition.

Winners

Table football – Mr Britten and Mr Martindale.

Pool – Francesca and Mr Britten

Skiers of the day

Anushka for her determination to improve.

Jessie for her masterful display of parallel turns and speed on the slalom course.

“The Beret of Shame”

There were numerous candidates this evening. George, who managed to fall over on the way to his bedroom, James, for his lift pass indiscretion, Annabelle, for her off-piste adventure and Jessica, who trumped her way up the mountain. Jessica also invented a new acronym P.I.M.P which described an unfortunate possibility from all that bottom burping. Mr Britten decided that D.I.M.P was more appropriate for DooDoo in my pants!

However, for her bum sliding, ski losing, off-pisting exploits, the “beret of shame” went to Annabelle.

Tomorrow we have been promised karaoke; Mr Martindale has been perfecting his best Bon Jovi whilst the children will no doubt entertain us with a variety of more tuneful numbers.

Day 4 Ski trip

Day 4 – Ski Trip

An early start

The previous day everyone overslept. Mrs Martindale woke at just before 7.30am and there was a mad dash downstairs for breakfast. Mr Martindale was determined that this would not happen again. Alarm clocks had been set and clothes laid out ready to jump into. Like a salmon, Mr Martindale leap out of bed, showered, shaved and headed out to wake the children. “I can’t believe it! They were all still asleep” moaned Mr Martindale. This came as no surprise to the rest of the staff who know the difference between six and seven o’clock.

Breakfast - The usual stuff plus the return of the hot dogs.

Henry arrived looking slightly sheepish wearing “The beret of shame” but was soon smiling after receiving the attention of a pack of girl guides who are on the adjacent table at breakfast.

Skiing

Both groups were back on the mountain. Mr Martindale joined Mrs Martindale’s group and they worked on developing their turns. Mr Britten’s group explored new parts of the resort including a tricky red run and a slalom challenge (see later).

Highlights and lowlight

1. To get onto a lift you need to have a lift pass. These are placed in your left jacket pocket and it allows you instant access. James had remembered to keep his ski pass in his left jacket pocket at all times. He had followed the rules. What he hadn’t done was to remember to swap his lift pass when he put on a different jacket. Fortunately, Mrs Martindale was available to run back to the hotel and retrieve it or it could have been a very long morning.

2. Mr Britten’s group skied down a red run that earlier in the day had been used for a giant slalom competition. It was very steep and challenging. So it was very pleasing to see most of the group skiing confidently down the run. Ten out of the twelve finished without incident. Annabelle’s left ski finished the course confidently. The only problem was that it wasn’t attached to Annabelle. Finding red runs far too tame, Annabelle decided to go “off-piste”. Unfortunately, it was the last bit of skiing she did on the slope. She completed the course on her backside. Amelia, who had stopped to help, carried the right ski down the slope to join up with its buddy.

3. Slalom racing. Mr Britten’s group had a fun competition at the end of their session. An eight gate slalom course was set up and the children raced each other in pairs. The race began with two starting gates and a red route and a blue route. For the record, the results were as follows: Sarah beat Callum, Jessie beat Katie, Cameron beat George, Amelia beat Annabelle, Lois beat Jessica and Jack beat Henry. The races were incredibly close and very exciting. All the children skied well and Henry was singled out by Christian for his efforts and got a high five.

More of Christian’s wisdom

“I never fall over, the mountain moves to my body position”

“If you listen to me for one minute, your skiing will improve by ten minutes”

To Mr Britten at the slalom races – “I don’t want to race, I would destroy you in front of the children”

Lunch was meatballs in a tomato sauce with spaghetti.

More later…

Monday 1 April 2013

Day 3 Ski Trip Evening

Day 3 – Afternoon and evening

The children were invited to take part in an Easter egg hunt around the village this afternoon. After an exhaustive search they had found a grand total of zero eggs. The organisers took pity on the children and gave them a small bag a sweets for trying hard. Shame faced, we trudged back to hotel after our less than stellar performance

Dinner

Starter – Carrot soup and bread

Main – Lasagne, garlic bread and salad.

Dessert – Pancakes or poached pears

Evening entertainment – The Quiz

I could write all night about the quiz this evening. In the end it was won by a team lead by Jessie with Rosemary, Jessica, Macy and Sarah. However, I think the following quotes will provide you with a flavour of the evening:

“Question one – Who is the president of America?”

“I know that one – it’s David Cameron!”

“No it’s not, he’s president of Pakistan!”

“Mr Britten, is there one or two z’s in abysmal?”

“I think you will find there aren’t any” said Mr Britten

“Question – Which is the highest mountain in the UK?”

“Answer – The white cliffs of Dover”

“Who gave instructions to his team of angels in the well-known TV and film series?”

“The answer was Charlie”

“Oh no – we put Jesus!”

“Question – How many countries border France?”

“That’s easy! There is a map on the wall!”

“Yes, but that is a map of America boys”

Skiers of the day

For excellent progress – Max

For a desire to improve technique – George

The “beret of shame”

Many, many candidates for the beret this evening. However, when you are told to never, ever, ever take off your skis after a fall and then take not one but both skis. The beret was given to Henry who managed to spend ten minutes putting his skis back on after breaking the first rule of falling

Day 3 Ski Trip

Ski Trip Day 3

Breakfast – All the usual plus bacon rolls (How very French!)

Both groups headed out to the slopes, full of excitement. The sky was as blue as yesterday but there was a definite chill in the air. Not enough to worry about but maybe the sign of things to come. The piste was slightly icy and required careful skiing. Despite this, the children had a fairly incident free morning. Lois, following on from her bum boarding exploits obviously decided she was better on her backside than on skis and spent a lot of the morning on the floor. Dylan tangled with the button lift and lost. Although they are called drag lift, riding face down and head first is not the preferred method.

Lunch – Vegetable soup, Chicken Pasta bake with salad and bread, fruit and yoghurt

Most ski lessons are fairly similar. Take chair lift up the mountain, ski down, rinse, repeat. However, we are constantly amused, educated and chastised by our ski instructor Christian. With a face as rugged as a rock face and a tan that could be described as “fifty shades of brown”.

The wisdom of Christian.

Throughout the week, I intend to recall some of Christian’s teachings in the hope that they may inspire us all to discover our inner skier.

“Don’t fight the skis!”

“If you don’t stop snow ploughing; you will end up as a sixty year old snow plougher”

To Callum – “I will talk to the trees; they are better listeners than you”

“If you listen to me you will improve, if you don’t you will not”

To Jack “I will tell you when you are doing it right and when you are doing it wrong. You are doing it wrong!”

All the above sound better in a French accent.

Highlights of the day so far

Mrs Martindale helping the children by falling over next to them.

Jessica trying to get off the chair lift a little too soon.

Free cake at the bar!

Jessie losing her ski pole from the chair lift.

Katie wearing the “beret of shame” at breakfast.

More later
